Turned out this was a non-story - at least the way Ted Thompson wanted it to play out, and he pretty much got his wish. I don’t know if you’d ever want a single player to hold as much power as Favre did/does, and having a big press conference/handshake session/hugs and kisses would have just fed that.
So the headline “Favre Returns” disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. ESPN (how did they scoop this story? Wire taps?) reported the news before it hit the air locally, and probably got more play on ESPN than it did locally. Most fans seemed happy, but I credit Thompson’s unwillingness to make a big deal of it, because within 24 hours everyone was re-focused on the 2006 NFL Draft.
So Favre’s back - hurray! Can he carry the 53-man roster to an 8-win season? Not likely.
