I only heard a snippet of this, and it came from the mouth of the sports talk guy with the shortest memory in history (The “I didn’t say that” Rookie) - but I hear chatter that Mike Holmgren, former coach of the Green Bay Packers for their last two Super Bowl visits and victory in Super Bowl XXXI (Superbowl 31 to you and me), was going to ink a deal worth $7 million per year.
Really?
This was the guy that Paul Allen (owner of the Seattle Seahawks) wooed with limousine pickups and private jet flights to Seattle while Green Bay was in pursuit of a second straight Superbowl win, eventually inking Holmgren to 5 years, $25 million and handed two jobs, that of coach and of GM, with the expectation of taking that team to the Big Dance (and winning) at some point in that contract. Now he’s only performing one of those jobs, and despite losing the Big Game he might get more?
Kudos to him if he can get it. For a coach I think he’s fantastic with the media - he knows what to say, how to say it, when not to say something. And he seems to be able to get a lot out of his talent.
But the timing of events during the SB XXXII run still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So the mean spirited part of me hopes he doesn’t get that much money if a deal gets done.
