Joey Harrington, the mannequin placed behind center for the last few years in Detroit has been “dealt” to the Dolphins for undisclosed compensation. I think the undisclosed compensation was not having to pay the $4M roster bonus due Harrington if he was on the Lions’ squad on June 15th.
Harrington wanted out.
The fans wanted Millen to oblige.
But Harrington’s contract included the ability to veto any trades he didn’t like. The story around the gatorade cooler is that Harrington believed Daunte Culpepper’s injuries are worse than reported, and that if he were to go to sunny Miami, he’d have a good chance of playing. So Harrington made it clear that he would veto any trade except one that placed him in Miami.
I’m sure Matt Millen huffed and puffed and threatened to blow Harrington’s house down, but Harrington knew he was living large in a brick abode. So Harrington will play backup to Culpepper, hoping the small-handed linebacker’s quarterback’s bum wheel stays flat. Sure, Harrington was plagued with an offense with a work ethic issue - but Joey still didn’t show any flashes of brilliance that normally come with being a top 3 overall pick in the draft.
I think this move is bad for Packer fans - he was a pretty reliable tackling dummy in Detroit. With an offensive eccentric mind like Mike Martz behind the wheel of the Motor City’s offense and a new QB, they just might present problems for the Packer defense.
