I was listening to The Fan today and listened intently as Chuck Freimund discussed with callers the theory that Ron Wolf selected Mike Sherman as GM and Head Coach to add some polish to what is already a gleaming legacy.  Well, if by polish you mean mud.

The theory is that Wolf wanted to appear as the primary architect of the turnaround in Green Bay in the 90’s, and that he purposely selected a person he felt was not up to the job, so that when that person eventually flopped, Wolf would look like an even brighter genius than most already consider him.  This would further endear him to Packer fans and NE Wisconsin, as the theory goes.

I think Chuck needs to stop smoking footballs.

If there’s one thing Ron Wolf was known for, it was his uncanny ability to put the right people in the right places to make that football machine run.  A QB coach from San Francisco.  A backup quarterback from Atlanta.  His last two choices for head coach in Green Bay did nothing to polish his legacy in Green Bay.  It hurt it, because it showed he was human, and made bad choices.  It didn’t make him look smarter by comparison; it made him look like he lost his touch.

Part of that theory included Wolf not turning over the GM reigns to now-Seattle coach Mike Holmgren as it would make it look as though Wolf had little to do with Green Bay’s success.  Huh?  Maybe he saw Mike didn’t have it in him to be a coach and GM.  Holmgren’s problems juggling those roles in Seattle proved that.  But selecting Mike Sherman just showed us that Wolf didn’t have the knack of making great moves anymore, and it was good he got out when he did.

So Chuck, please step away from the pigskin fatty, get a good night’s rest, and your head will be a lot clearer in the morning.
