This year the Green Bay Packers offensive line will employ a zone blocking scheme to help get their offense rolling. Unlike a more traditional blocking scheme where each lineman blocks an individual, like the name says, each offensive lineman will be responsible for blocking rushers for their defined zone. Using this scheme requires more athletic lineman, but if it works well will provide more opportunities for our revolving door running backs, which means Favre won’t feel the need to play like every series is his last.

I won’t kid you and say I know anything about the level of complexity of one system over another; I just hope this is a simpler system, because we may be starting two rookies on the O-line, and they’ll need all the help they can get to do a proficient job protecting a first-ballot hall of famer.

In a funny side note, The Houston Texans have also been noted as saying they’re going to use a zone blocking scheme. You remember who runs the offense over there, right? I think it’s Charmin, or something.

Hmm… Maybe we oughta rethink this zone blocking thing. If for no other reason than if he’s doing it, it can’t be right.
