This (Monday) morning the local Packer faithful were basking in the glow of a close win (17-14) over a much-improved Washington Redskin team. During the local sports talk on Monday, I heard a portion of the callers talk about how the game wasn’t as close as the score showed, that it was nearly a blowout.

I almost drove off highway 441 laughing. It was like Roy Williams was now a Packer fan and talking about how stupid it was that we nearly put up 40 points on the ‘Skins.

This was a very close game that could have gone either way. The Packers were pretty sloppy on offense, and without Charles Woodson barely outrunning Redskins QB Jason Campbell on an interception and dash to the end zone, this goes down as an L. The Packers were screwed on Bubba Franks force-out catch in the end zone, and Mason Crosby hitting the post was a bad break. But everyone knows the rules - the ball is supposed to go through the uprights, not bonk them. Crosby didn’t kick that ball well enough to go through. He missed another later in the game.

And if stickum were legal, the returned interception wouldn’t have mattered, because the hand-transplant recipients Campbell was throwing to would have added more than 3 points to the Redskins total.

Mark TauscherEditor’s note: Mark Tauscher still needs to work on that haircut. Maybe it’s his thuggy look that’s causing him to get called for more holding penalties this year than in all his previous years combined.* He got called again this week. I’m thinking he needs to go back to his clean cut Opie look he had when he entered the league. How could you make a call against that face? The older, grandfatherly referees like Ed Hochuli would probably rather pinch his cheeks than call holding against that nice young man.

But let’s see the forest for the trees; we won a close game against a good opponent. Neither team brought their ‘A’ games to the table, but the net result was still a Packer win. And 5-1 puts us right at the top of the NFC. Pretty nice view, huh?
