October 2007

Empty PocketsAfter my Week 4 miscalculations and the home team’s inability to play like men in their own house in Week 5, my front pockets (where I keep my money) look like the head of a cow, with empty, white ears sticking out.

But I’m a junkie, so I keep making picks. You can’t quit when you’re up and you certainly can’t quit when you’re down.

Winners are bold:

CIN @ KC
HOU @ JAC
MIA @ CLE
WAS @ GB - The Packers decide that they won’t let home invaders steal their valuables and have their way with their family anymore, and send the ‘Skins home losers.
STL @ BAL
MIN @ CHI - Pumped up from their win in Lambeau, they make quick work of the Vikings.
PHI @ NYJ
TEN @ TB - Tampa Bay’s been on a tear, but I think Vince Young has the juice.
CAR @ ARI
NE @ DAL - Dallas is good, but New England is so good they should be playing in the UFL.
OAK @ SD
NO @ SEA - I’m betting against New Orleans the rest of the season.
NYG @ ATL

Record this season:

Week 1: 10-6
Week 2: 12-4
Week 3: 8-8
Week 4: 5-9
Week 5: 7-7

Totals: 42-34

After getting hammered for a second straight week by teams who’ve been masquerading as sheep in wolves’ clothing, I thought a review of some of last week’s performances was in order:

Carolina @ New Orleans - I picked New Orleans. They lost 16-13. After the tear they were on last season, there’s no way they could start this season 0-4. I didn’t realize that pride had an expiration date. For the Aints, that date was January 21st, 2007.

Arizona @ St. Louis - I picked St. Louis. They lost 34-31. At the beginning of the season, St. Louis had a power ranking of 17 and was picked to finish .500. Arizona had a power ranking of 23 and was picked “Most Likely To Still Be A Loser.” The Dick Vermeil era is long since over in St. Louis, and I just need to learn to accept that.

San Diego @ Denver - I picked Denver. The Chargers crushed them 41-3. Who knew the Broncos were bending over to let other NFL franchises join the Mile High Stadium club? I guess things are starting to warm up for lonely visitors to cold Colorado.

Baltimore @ San Francisco - I took the ‘Niners. Stupid. They were only able to muster a single, two-play scoring drive in the second half of the game to make this pitiful contest a contest. ‘Frisco ain’t all that, and neither are the Ravens.

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers - That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Dallas @ Buffalo - I picked the Bills, but only because it completed a perfect home team selection across the board. I thought the Cowboys would blow the Bills out. They barely escaped with their lives and undefeated record intact.

C’mon Broncos, Niners, Rams and Saints - quit embarrassing yourselves and me. You make me look stupid for picking you to win, and yourselves stupid for just taking the field. Just walk out to the 50 for the opening coin toss and wave your white flags of surrender.

It looks like former Packer running back Najeh Davenport is in trouble again. And again, it has to do with a girl. In his college days it was widely reported that he dropped a growler into a former girlfriend’s clothes hamper after she’d broken up with him. Amping up his aggression he was charged with domestic violence along with a sprinkling of other charges stemming from a confrontation with the mother of his 5 year-old son.

It seems Najeh has trouble with women. And it seems that when Najeh has trouble with women, women end up having trouble with Najeh. Maybe to make it a fair fight, Najeh should be gay. And he should be hooked up with something like a defensive lineman, so when he gets all pissy and wants to poop about it or get violent, odds are better he’s going to end up shitting himself rather than the dirty clothes receptacle.
